BlueWhaleCRM Architecture
BlueWhaleCRM is built entirely on Microsoft's .NET platform. Although most software that started in the open source world is geared towards the linux or LAMP platforms to preserve the pure open-source architecture, this is not necessarily a benefit in the corporate environment. Several independent studies have shown that the total cost of ownership (TCO) for Microsoft Windows servers is lower than that of Linux servers when taking into account the advanced skill level needed to manage linux servers. In addition, a majority of corporations already have in place a Microsoft infrastructure and the people to support it.

Ease of administration, existing architecture, and compatibility with standard desktop applications are the main reasons we chose the .NET platform for BlueWhaleCRM. By building BlueWhaleCRM in .NET, we have opened up an unlimited array of integration options with other systems that many companies use. The available source code in our Developer version is easy to read and extremely easy to customize in the .NET environment.

To run BlueWhaleCRM, we recommend Windows server 2000 or 2003, MSSQL Server 2000 Standard or Enterprise Edition, and Internet Information Services (IIS) version 5 or higher. While this is the optimal configuration, developers can run the entire application on Windows XP and MSDE. This configuration is not recommended for an enterprise deployment, but it can be used successfully to develop & test BlueWhaleCRM before any investment in hardware or software is made.
